Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, Ohio is the site of a very clever fundraiser for the historical society. The members dress up in period costumes and portray interesting characters from their town's history, while supporters peruse the cemetery.
Introducing the cast of characters:
Meet the generous doctor who donated his land for the city cemetery (1870)
Presenting the doctor whose death still remains unsolved...
Make the acquaintance of the only known female ironmaster in the world, and the second wealthiest woman in America!
Introducing the lady who died with her unborn child, whose monument mysteriously has a "warm" hand on its face
Presenting the Russian ballerina...whose crypt was broken into to steal a broach from the Czar of Russia. Two of her fingers were cut off to steal her rings as well.
Meet a steamship river baron...
Make the acquaintance of the still disappointed in love lady, who sued for breach of promise
Meet the local Civil War hero...
And his charming wife!
Introducing the parents who had the first child in Ironton, Ohio
Presenting a freed slave and conductor on the Underground Railroad
Make the acquaintance of the "Red Fox" of the Underground Railroad, who assisted over 300 slaves on the road to freedom
Meet the wealthy bank owner...
...And his wife
Presenting a county prosecuting attorney
Introducing a treasurer of the United States under President F. Roosevelt
Meet a solicitor of the United States under President Arthur
Make the acquaintance of the first "caped" ironman, a master of iron who always wore a cape while visiting his plants so his clothes wouldn't get singed or burned
And, his caped monument
Meet the local agriculture expert who increased apple production
Introducing the open air monument, probably a portal to another world
Meet the cross, the cause and site of a death, as a worker was trying to erect the monument
And for the finale,
Meet the REAL ghost!

All that history in Ironton, who knew. Great evening for everyone I'm sure.
Cool! There's nothing like that out here. What a fun way to get involved in local history!
What fun, now that looks like just the place to be in Oct.
What an AWESOME idea.
Dynomite story with a perfect ending! And I love that "portal to another world!" Is that a real or made up stone? Just curious about Mr. Dupuy and wondering if he's related to Gwen (that's her maiden name)! ;) Can't wait for Turkey week <3
