I recently acquired a beautiful pair of twin beds for my boys. They've been sleeping on mattresses on the floor for a very long time. We've waited since September for their bunk beds, but they weren't being delivered until mid-November. When these came up in conversation, I grabbed them. Then I realized that most of my furniture is used. Is that a bad thing? I love wearing things out, and making them do, but is it wrong to have a whole house of used furniture? For example, my bedroom set, including two dressers, two nightstands, and headboard and footboard, my sons' bunkbed and dresser, my other son's bedroom set (two dressers, head/foot board, two night stands), my two sets of kitchen tables, my ping pong table and pool table, my t.v., my fooze ball table, my microwave, my computer...you get the drift. Today I am thankful for my used furniture. I do need to clarify that the mattresses are always new ;-)Thursday, November 6, 2008

Used is BEST! Most of our stuff is used too. We love hand-me-downs. I applaud you for being thankful for these things. Just remember, we won't be taking it with us in the next life so who really cares how you obtained it? :)
We pass furniture around Kath's family, when you of us is done using something, we always find someone that can use it. There are lots of misc pieces that have moved from one to another and sometime a 3rd and 4th.
Talk about used furniture--the only thing in our bedroom that is new would be the mattress and bed. The dressers and vanity are umpteen years old. The bed in the smaller bedroom was a bed that my Uncle Fred bought from a school teacher, then later gave to my parents. I then used it and now it is in the guest room. It has to be over 100 years old. The dining room set my mother bought from her boss years ago for $200. It had 5 chairs and a captain's chair, a buffet and china closet. When I had the seats refinished several years ago, that cost me $500--$300 more than what my mother paid for it. It is a wonderful set and well made. I could go on and on. The newest thing we have is our living room couch, wingback chair, Uncle David's chair, coffee table, entertainment center and TV. We've had most of these for 14 years. Nothing wrong with good used furniture. Actually when we bought our living room set, we gave Rich and Kelly our old couch. Everything is serviceable.
Uh, Ame--if the mattresses are new, then your furniture is newer than ours. :)
Not to mention which--the furniture is yours (which is more than I can say about most things in the house I live in).
You are a great thrifty, smart mom. I guess you are like your mom that way!
Amy --
Happy Birthday!
I am a day late so I do apologize -- but want you to know how wonderful, grounded, resourceful, wise and pretty you are!
Love,
Whitney
