Drowning in Dryness!

My children's school has a policy that they're not allowed to bring water to school. The privilege was revoked when high school students were caught sipping on vodka in class. If Tanner tries to leave the cafeteria with a bottle for the rest of the day, he can't leave the cafeteria until the bottle is in the trash. If Porter needs water at 10 a.m. and reaches into his backpack for his bottle, it goes into the trash. I keep sending water because there are times when they're not caught, but usually they're sent to the water fountains. They're coming home with cracked and bleeding lips because they're not getting enough water, and I'm less than thrilled to think about them drinking from something that has more germs than a toilet! What's the best way to approach this with the school district, any suggestions?

duplicate what you just wrote, and send it to the school administration. Suggest that if they'd like, you can send a sign up around to parents who feel the same way as you, and you can have parent volunteers stand at the entrance to the school and at the cafeteria door ways to inspect water bottles to make sure they aren't a violation. You could instill some sort of a stamp or something verifying that this particular bottle is 'safe'... what a crazy thing. Talk about one or two ruining it for the whole system! The idea probably won't fly, but something along those lines would get the administration thinking... and if enough parents complained, I'm sure they would do something about allowing students to drink bottled water again. Sad.

What about sending a Dr's note stating that for health reasons they need to be able to drink bottled water throughout the day?

Perhaps the school could sell bottled water to the kids while they are in school. I know that you cannot bring bottled water into the airport but you can purchase it once you are at the gate areas. Perhaps something similar to that in the schools. Water is very important to have during the day, and I, like you, would not want to or have my children drink from those germ-infested bubblers. Perhaps they should get those huge bottles of water and the kids can drink out of paper cups, having a trash bucket next to the large water bottle. Hope you can convince the school of something. No child should be deprived of water and become dehydrated, end up with cracked and bleeding lips. Good luck in your endeavor.

That is crazy.

Maybe the parents of the students who put vodka in their water bottles need to be the ones who inspect every water bottle that comes into the school.

Not right that other students can't have water because of a few students!

I would send a "nice" letter to the Administration, PTA, School Board and copy all the local media. Cite health reasons including the recommended daily intake of water that is put out by the government. If that doesn't work, show up to school every day at 10 and 1, have your kids paged to the office and give them a drink. It is a ridiculous rule.

Also suggest that they have someone at the doors coming in to check for a sealed bottle before they can take them into school. Once they are in, they should be good to go.

or

Tables in the lunch room where the bottles are put in the morning and the students can go there to get a drink during the day.

I like the idea of having the students paged to the office. I'm pretty sure that would be the most effective solution, though it might not win you many friends in your new school system...

Good luck with this one. That is too bad that few bad kids ruin it for everyone else. Can they bring crystal lite in a water bottle? That would be good fluids, and still no sugar.

I like the comment about informing the media...they always like a good human interest story...probably as a last resort once you have petitioned the school. I think you should take pictures of your kids' lips when they are cracked and bleeding, get all the parents to sign a petiion (get all your friends to take pictures of there kids' lips) and present it at the next school board meeting. Maybe take a actual doctor or a letter from a doctor to the meeting as well and show the school board that their new "rule" is endangering your children's health. If that doesn't work, then call the local TV station! Good Luck.

I would say that that would be unsafe for the Kids. Public schools are funny. Rules are based upon the actions of the other kids. The Public school Agenda fascinates me.

I agree with Shirley.
If they sold water with a special label..could be a fund raiser.
Also I would document by taking pictures of your boys lips.
I would get a slip from a doctor.
Desparate situations call for desparate measures.
Love you.
