Briggs Berry Memorial Golf Tournament

October 2, 2018

The Granbury High School boys golf team won the fourth annual Briggs Berry Memorial Golf Tournament on October 1, 2018, at Pecan Plantation Country Club.

Granbury Purple team composed of Dustin Anderson, Christian Keto, Jake Holbrook, Ty Holbrook, and Jake Piland scored 213 points overall to win the first-place prize. Jake Holbrook, a senior, was the top individual golfer in the 27-hole competition.

In third place was the Granbury Gold squad composed of Turtle Grizzell, Sam Shade, Jay Shero, Canyon Winters, and Ryan Ziegler. The fivesome had 189 points.

The tournament included an 18-hole team round followed by a 9-hole individual head-to-head contest. The scoring system was different from most golf tournaments, according to GHS head coach Steve Ward. For this tourney, a higher score was the goal with 10 points awarded for double eagles, 6 for eagles, 4 for birdies, 3 for par, 2 for bogeys, and 1 for double bogeys.

Previously the Brazos Classic, the tourney name was changed in 2015 to honor Berry, a former GHS golfer who passed away in September 2014. His parents, Everett and DeAnna, were on hand for the competition.

“It means a lot for these players who knew Briggs. By naming it the Briggs Berry Memorial they carry him in their hearts and play with more fire,” commented Ward. “The golfers really enjoy the format, and we get a big field. Many teams come to this event also because of the impact Briggs left.”

Others competing at the tournament included the ninth-place Granbury White team (Lawson Berry, Myles Evans, Graham Garrison, R.J. Howell, and Tyler Sheppard) and Granbury Black team (Tyler Ditto, Tyler Seago, Mike Tharp, and Britt White). Also playing as individual medalists were Mitchell Evans, Miles Hopson, Nathan Lambert, and Sawyer Schenewark.

High school golf teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex traveled to Granbury to compete in the invitational tournament. Others competing were Aledo, Burleson Centennial, Cleburne, Fort Worth Arlington Heights, Frenship, Lewisville Hebron, Mansfield Legacy, Northwest, Saginaw, and Stephenville.

Ward is assisted by Samantha Kennedy. Assisting with the tournament were booster club members.
