Gardening 101

We're trying to help the Ortons get their garden growing. We've got everything planted, and are now starting to see sprouts and lots of weeds!

As we were replanting flowers from Mom, we found lots of rocks. We didn't know they were there to hold up the edge of the driveway. Another mistake. We made them a Cairn instead.

My brother Rich did a little experiment last year in his garden that should be shared. He filled his empty milk jugs with water and placed them around his garden. His theory is that the jugs will retain radiant heat, and when things cool down at night, the jugs provide extra heat to the plant. The watermelon plant with jugs produced 15 melons. The one without jugs? One. This one jug is a small start, but we'll have plenty more to fill.

I'll have to share the milk jug idea with the farmer here at our house~

That's a really cool idea. I saw someone's garden with pie tins strung over it... it was the replacement for the scarecrow. I bought some pie tins at Walmart. I'm going to try it. The birds always peck at my tomatoes when they start to ripen.
Plus, we're making a real scarecrow, just because I think they're cute. And I want one.
More tips! (please)

The garden looks great. Wow, I will have to give the jug theory a try out here. I tried growing watermelons and only grew one small one on each vine.

I too will have to try the jug idea. Very interesting. Enjoy the fruits of your garden.
