Slice of Life

On the lighter side of the arrow of light ceremony, there was a male cake bake contest!

Cooper did a fabulous job on his horse - he squeezed out every lock of mane!

Porter did a great job on his pizza, even got a pizza box to carry it in, and won "Most Realistic."

Lucky Me!

Who do you know that has SIX sister-in-laws! I'm a lucky gal. These two are Jarrod's twin sisters, Janel and Janeen, and it's their birthday today. Happy Birthday, gals. You're a girl's best friend, and wonderful aunts to the boys. (Can you tell they're twins?)

March is Just Around the Weekend!

The boys have noticed the increase in wind to our area. Cooper helped Sawyer and Miller make kites out of Walmart bags, and an undone plastic lei necklace. They had a great time flying their homemade kites. It made me think of the adage, "In like a lion, out like a lamb."

White Wash

Miller loves water. He comes running when I turn on my washing machine so he can watch the water. Thinking I would get a head start on the growing pile in my laundry room, I started a dark wash. While running to get Tanner's clothes, Miller filled my bleach cup with bleach. I have to admit I was fairly impressed he knew where the bleach goes. For a two year old that's being quite observant. I was even more impressed he knew when to try this when the bleach cap would be loose. I'm thankful he suffered no injuries with my bleach. I have learned not to mess around with wash on the sabbath day! I lost 3 complete outfits for Sawyer, and a shirt for Porter - could have been a lot worse.

Around the Corner and on the Table

These are a few of the drawings I found on my table yesterday.
The black crow is rather humerous,
The blue jay is very blue!

This turkey is kind of cute.

The cardinal is very handsome!

But his red robin is my favorite. Spring must be coming soon,
as this is what has been visiting our yard, and prompting Sawyer to draw.

Surprise!

There was pure excitement yesterday when we came home from speech and found this message, "I'm calling from the library to let you know that Miller came the closest to correctly guessing the number of hearts in the jar..."
Miller guessed 300. There was 323. It's so nice to have big brothers to help you and to share your surprises.

14 Days of Love

One very Smart Mama issued a Valentine's Challenge (here), 14 Days of love. In her words, "It's about personalizing our lives and putting more effort into the thing that matters most -- relationships." It was a great inspiration to me and I accepted the challenge. It was a simple way to make winter in the month of February more exciting, a reason to do good, motivation to keep going, an excuse to be more Christ-like.

...serving my family...

Day 1: My boys love to eat. No matter how much I cook, there are never any leftovers. Cinnamon rolls are a great way to fill their little bellies up for the night, and make everybody happy. Miller was especially happy that night as he found a fun way to sneak in a bite before the big boys knew what was happening.

Day 2: There are not a lot of options for my newly 16-ized son when it comes to finding a date, and then going on a date. He's been feeling a little blue this season of love, so we went on a date. We had tickets to the symphony orchestra. Their theme was the "Bachelors," songs written by famous composers who never married. We visited a store later, and got to pick out a V day card for someone he misses in Texas. It was a great way to show love to him.

Day 3: There has been a day that we've avoided for a long time, but it was time. We had to officially become Ohio residents. It's a day long process that entailed a trip to the State Police to take driving tests and an eye exam. Then we went to the Bureau of Registrars to turn in our tests, pay money, and get photographed. Then we went to a new car dealership to get our out-of-state vehicles inspected. Moving along, we traveled to the Clerk of Courts to turn in our car titles to get new state titles. Next, we went back to the Bureau of Registrars to pay money and receive plates. Five hours later, we have four shiny plates, three licenses, and something Tanner can do that will keep him busy and happy: DRIVE! He feels so loved!

Day 4: I took some boys while Jarrod was teaching, and plastered his office with pink and red hearts replete with cute phrases such as, I love you, As you wish, Families are Forever, Kiss me... He needed to draw attention to himself, his cute personality, and shout out to the world how much his family loves him. Don't you think?

...with my family, serving others...

Day 5: My husband, and my husband and I were able to go on splits with the missionaries. What a great way to show love for Heavenly Father, and our brothers and sisters, than serving in this capacity.

Day 6: I wanted to share the week of love theme with Jarrod's department, so every day I baked something for him to bring in and leave for others to feel the love. He made a cute sign and came home with an empty plate at the end of the day. With oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter/kiss and sugar cookies, the week was very tasty.

Day 7: The young men in the church are responsible for shoveling the sidewalks at the church when it snows. Having six such capable individuals, we thought we should take upon ourselves that responsibility and let everyone else have the day off. Part of us wished we had called out the ranks, but the other half that endured three hours of chipping two inches of ice is glad that we could be of service

Day 8: One Sunday we baked and spent the day delivering cookies to homebound elderly widows in our church congregation. That has to be one of the best ways to involve children in keeping the sabbath day holy.

Day 9: This is the home of a lady that I visit teach. Visit here if you'd like to learn more about this monthly service opportunity for women. She lives under very humble circumstances. This month her need was a pair of snow gloves and size 10 shoes for her grandson. She knows I have every size of clothing and shoes for boys, so it is great when they can be put to good use. I'm glad my boys are learning to share and give

...serving others more meaningful...

Day 10: "Mom, are you 41? Is that a bad age? If you're old that means you're going to die so I don't want you to be old. You have to stay alive until I'm 91. I'd like that. I'd also like you not to yell. I'm not talking about the kind of yell where you yell for us to come eat, like dinner or lunch. I mean the other kind of yell." This is a way to show love that would make a difference. I promise to try, Sawyer.

Day 11: During the week of love, it was our Bishop's birthday. His wife wanted to do something but didn't know what. I suggested a surprise birthday party / adult game night, and thus the fun night was created! Since it was a surprise, I became the primary organizer, and had a great time getting the party ready. But, to see the support he received, and his face when he realized he was loved by his congregation, was worth all the hard work.

...serving those who can't help themselves...

Day 12: Meet Dicie Bexfield. She's 97, and a sweetie. Sometimes she needs help with her walker, which Miller is more than willing to do. Sometimes when I visit we have to uncover and dust off the organ for a hymn or two. She needed that this month. There hasn't been much sun.

Day 13: This is another house that I visit. Even before I got to the door, my boys knew what to do. It's been a great two weeks.

...serving those with no voice...

"As most of you know, we have started and finished the paperwork for another adoption. Now, we are just waiting to be picked. We are again asking for your prayers and assistance. Our chances of adopting increase with exposure. With all the ways of networking and communication that are available through the internet, we are asking for your help to let others know about us. Our hope is that someone might know someone (etc…) who is dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and thinking about adoption..." Please read more here, and please share with others. https://beta.itsaboutlove.org/ial/profiles/6397755/ourMessage.jsf

Day 14: These are my friends. Please share this with those who are in a situation to be of help, or those who have contacts that could be of help. Helping spirits be a part of the sealing covenant is truly a gift of love.

Feeling Full

Every time I pull out my mixer, and see this toilet paper tube, I smile. I personally have no need to have a bit of my mixer cord stuffed in an empty toilet paper tube, but Mom thought otherwise. She was out visiting me in January, and one day after coming out of the bathroom, having emptied the roll of its contents, decided that it needed a new home and put it on my mixer cord. I think it's hilarious. Her mission in life is to save. Whether it's people, clothes, food or empty toilet paper tubes, everything needs to feel wanted. I love this about my Mom. Miss you! Thanks for loving me.

Buses, Boys and Bites

This is Miller's little bus. It was packed in the bag I brought this morning to church. He played with it close to 40 minutes! I remember thinking, "Wow, I didn't know he liked this bus so much. I'll have to keep it in the church bag." Miller was also snacking on a few goldfish. I was proud of myself for finding two things that would keep him so entertained for so long. Little did I know that he was putting the fish inside the bus. I guess it needed a few passengers. Then, when he was ready, he would open the little door to extract the unlucky passenger and have a bite! Good job Miller!
We want our children there, and we also want them to learn reverence, which is a form of love for the Savior. We want our children to understand that it is a worship service for Jesus, where we show him we love him. You may be surprised at how much your children understand about this. Alma tells us in the Book of Mormon that “little children do have words given to them many times, which confound the wise and the learned.” (Alma 32:23.) They can be very sensitive to the Spirit. We love our children. Elder W.M. Lawrence

WWWF Kid Style, Part II

Here's the update. Introducing Cooper the Cruncher! This class is not free, but we'll hang around as long as we can. The numbers have steadily increased, maybe we'll get lost in the shuffle. This has been a GREAT experience for Mr. Tenderheart, tears flow easily child number four.

Update to Heavy Hands, Heavy Heart

Later that day, Tanner played in his high school basketball game, and as a result of diving for a loose ball, got a concussion, wiggly front tooth, braces imprinted on his upper lip, and a day off from school while he visited doctors, dentists and orthodontists. It will take close to a year, we're told, to know if he's lost his tooth or not. He's actually in good spirits, and has enjoyed the comments. Thank you so much.

Heavy Hands, Heavy Heart

This is Tanner, my oldest son. I don't blog much about him because he's never around! He's such a good kid, although he's probably had the hardest time moving here, being in high school and everything that comes with change. He's having a miserable week. 1. His arm he hurt last February in baseball still hurts. We have medical bills we're still paying from Texas as proof nothing was found except tendonitis. I thought maybe an accupuncturist would be able to help him. He was diagnosed with a pinched nerve, and woke up today with a year's worth of pain back in one day. 2. He was unable to finish his braces treatment in Texas, so we're in the process of beginning treatment again. He had an appointment today, and begged for pain relief. 3. There are no girls out here he's interested in. The standards and culture are so different it's hard for him to even want to go to school. Sad week when you don't have a Valentine! He needs a "keep your chin up" talk that will lift his heart up as well. Any suggestions besides moving?

Write Upon My Heart

Sawyer offered in his prayer a simple plea for family unity and peace: "And can Dad come home and find us so happy and not fighting, even when we're playing games, that he'll walk in the door and go, 'Wow!'" I could not have said it better myself.

"Parents should teach their children to pray. The child learns both from what the parents do and what they say. The child who sees a mother or a father pass through the trials of life with fervent prayer to God and then hears a sincere testimony that God answered in kindness will remember what they saw and heard. Our goal when we teach our children to pray is for them to want God to write upon their hearts and be willing then to go and do what God asks of them." President Henry Eyring

WWWF Kid Style

Our community, in addition to basketball and baseball leagues, tried something new this year and offered wrestling in order to build their interest in the sport for high school competition. This is a new sport for our family. We've never lived in an area where wrestling was supported by a high school, never mind a community program for kids. We went because we thought it was free, and would be fun to try (on a temporary basis). Wow. Introducing Slammin' Sawyer Schenewark, after two practices boasting an impressive 14-0 smackdown record.

Bad Hair Day! Contest

Ever have one of those days where you want to pull your hair out because your hair needs to be pulled out? I need a hair cut, gee, it's only been since September. I've gone longer, but don't want to. So there will be no more posting of self until self has a haircut. Hence, Sawyer will be filling in for me, pony tail style. Just joking. Life with long hair is not that bad. Actually, I'm quite thankful to have hair. But, I am calling for shots of bad haircuts. The entries will be posted, and judged by you. The winner will receive a small token of West Virginia love. Since Hillbilly Hotdogs probably don't mail well, it will be a different kind of West Virginia love. Send all entries to schenewark@yahoo.com. May the best tale win! Last day to send photos is Friday.

Oh Shoot, It's a Shot

The day is here. The weather cooperated again, giving us a snow day, no school. That is a perfect time to get the little stuff done, like getting six boys to the doctor. I'm not necessarily a huge proponent of the flu shot. I've had two, both times when I was pregnant. I did notice I never got sick, and the effects seemed to last for two years. However, my neighbor is a doctor, and said the flu was two days away from our area. He tracks it with the CDC website. The last time my boys got the flu, in May in Texas, they all got double lung pneumonia, and half had double ear infections as well. I don't want to do that again. I didn't opt for shots then as it was $25 per needle, but here they're covered How do you feel about the flu shot, and have you had yours? (We're up for trying the nasal spray version this year!)

Join Me For Lunch!

I was dutifully eating the one leftover bowl of chili yesterday and noticed a small red object in the middle of the bowl. My first impresssion was that it was a piece of tomato. However, after finishing half the bowl, and coming back to heat up another portion, I realized it was a Ranger tomato - a lovely red piece of dog food. Gross! How it got in the bowl, and stored in the fridge for two days, and then went unnoticed by me is just plain unfair. Bon appetite!

Snow White Pictures

I took these pictures to remind me that winter can be beautiful, even in Huntington, WV!

Finally, the sun came out, the blue sky was shining, and for a moment, before the ice began to melt, the trees sparkled.

"All things bright and beautiful...the Lord God made them all." Now, back to the Monday morning rituals.
