It was fairly pleasant yesterday, I believe it got up to 60 degrees. As a result, our heat never really kicked on. After dinner I was beginning to get a little chilly, and went to check the thermostat - it definitely needed to be bumped up a little. In so doing, I detected a faint smell of natural gas. I don't have much experience with natural gas. I cooked on a gas stove in California, but this house has a gas stove and gas furnace. I remember Tanner mentioning Sunday how he could smell natural gas outside. A few alarm bells started to go off in my head so I thought I would call and ask the gas company a few questions. "Columbia Gas, what's your emergency?" I don't have much natural gas experience but I'm smelling a little bit of gas when I turn my heat on coming through the vents. Is this okay? "Don't touch the phone, don't hang up when we're through, don't turn off lights that are on, don't turn on lights that are off...evacuate your house." That was a bit of jolt. I had two children already asleep and it was COLD outside. We evacuated to the car and waited 90 minutes outside, and then 90 more minutes in a neighbor's house. Turns out we had a carbon monoxide leak through the furnace, and would not be here this morning without following the promptings we received. I'm extremely glad to be awake this morning!Tuesday, December 16, 2008
Do You Need to Check Your Batteries?

Amy Jo, this gave me chills. What a blessing, thank you for sharing and for the reminder!
I'm glad you're here this morning!!!
That is scary, We don't have a gas house, but I will keep this in mind for when we do in the future. Carbon Monoxide is a scary thing, it just lulls you to sleep, and you don't wake up.
I am glad that you are here to remind us to check the batteries and to share this scary experience with us.
Wow, that ran a shiver thru me! I am glad you listened to those promptings!!
Thanks for the reminder to listen!
Glad you are safe!
um...HELLO! Where's my phone call. How come I didn't know about this? Thank you for listening to the promptings that you received. WOW. I'm grateful that you are still here. SCARY.
OH so glad you are all still here. We love you guys and are thankful all turned out well.
Ditto.
Wow! That was a scary one. I am so glad you guys are ok.
Whew! S.C.A.R.Y. Glad you're all well. xoxo
I am happy that you got that fixed and that you have some nice neighbors. :)
Wow! Glad that you are all o.k. A good thing to remember is to change batteries in the smoke alarms and CO2 alarms twice a year--daylight savings in March and return to regular time in November. That way, you'll always be safe and the alarms should go off because the batteries are fresh. We do this twice a year. Also, your landlord should have the furnace serviced once a year. If that had been done, perhaps this would not have happened. Glad that Tanner had smelled the gas as well. Our Lord was certainly watching out for all of you. Love to all, Aunt Shirley
Heyyyy, I smelled that smell when we were there and mentioned it to Bro B... he didn't smell anything so I thought maybe it was my imagination... YAY Tanner for speaking UP and YAY Mom for making the call! We love and miss you too much... played tons of UNO and then Super Scrabble tonight w/#1 son, brought back fond memories in Ohio! *big smile*
oh my gosh amy!! way to listen to those promptings...thats scary...glad your here too!!!!!
Oh my gosh- wow. What a blessing for to have the promptings of the Holy Ghost. I am so glad that you listened and that you are all alright.
I am going to go and plug in my Co2 detector right now. We haven't done it since we moved here.
Wow.
