Letter #49

Dear Family and Friends and Curious Readers,

I do hope you are well. I am. I have plenty of vitamin c, vitamins, though if you wanted to throw in a b-complex or iron or something like that I think it'd be good. I did get to talk to President Tavares one more time. It was a poignant reunion. I know him well enough to know that I love him and that he loves me and that we are both working for the very same cause, that of God.

No packages from you. It seems like you sent one a while ago but it hasn't got here yet. . .I did get a package though and boy has it been nice. They always come at the right time. Like when it has rained for three weeks, and we're still living out of suitcases and one of my suits, my backpack and my towel are all trying to grow mold despite my best efforts. Ugh. Thank you dear Merritt family. The Brasilians living with me especially enjoyed trying some of the things and I love coming home and thinking,"What will I eat?" and then realize that I'll just look in the box, that box of magical things : )

Haven't heard or seen the new president yet, even though we passed by the office this morning. Thursday I believe we will have conference with him and that will be cool.

July 4th, I'm planning something patriotic! Also the ward threw a festa junina, which is technically a Catholic holiday celebrating saints but is a tradition in the church here as well. They make lots of food and play loud Brasilian polka, paint fake beards and do their best imitations of Brasilian rednecks. Not necessarily my fare, though they had hot, gingerized grape juice that was tasty, and we had something like 20-30 investigators at the party on Saturday. That warms my heart more than quentão (aforementioned drink). Also learned a new game, vivo/morto, very simple and fun. People standing wait for a caller who yells at various volumes vivo (living) or morto (dead); at vivo you need to be standing, at morto you have to crouch. If you get it wrong you're out, and the last one right wins. Surprisingly entertaining. Maybe a good family home evening game : )

Sunday we had three baptisms, two of which are pictured. It was a very sweet, simple baptismal meeting and the spirit edified those who stayed.

What was really exciting was the group who went to church who will be baptized this next week, led by a formerly menos ativo (less active) youth who will be receiving the priesthood next week. He leads the whole gang. Tonight we're going to watch a church movie with them and eat pizza. Lots of Potential missionaries! I love to teach this group, of course with our blind friend.

Last week of the transfer coming up! 11 months today, not that I'm counting. This has got to be the best time of the mission, cruising, teaching, hiking and finding all who will recognize the Lord's voice and come unto him.

Short note, did you know that Brasil has quadrillions of types of oranges? It's true, although I still think American ones are tastier. Some cool names I've found, Poncan, Mixirica, and Mourgot. Exotic fruit varieties : )

I know this letter is everywhere, but in its cracks and dents you'll find lots and lots of love : )  Who will you help hear the gospel this week? How will the spirit work through you? Miracles are happening here as we exercise faith to spread the good news, and I know that they will happen there as well, Welcome, Greg to the A-team ; )

#LettheWorkBeHastened,

Tanner

GREAT letter! I was surprised that Eldon did not mention 11 months in the mission as of today.

Great work going on there in Londrina! It's so awesome to see.

I can't believe the transfer is over in 1 week. Elder Cummings has not kept a companion (in the field, of course) for more than one transfer, other than his trainer.

Yeah, you received our package. A package packed with love for our nephew. That made us smile that you referred our package as a "magical box."
