2022 National Merit Commended Students

Four Granbury High School seniors were recently named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.  The announcement was made by principal Jeremy Ross on September 23, 2021.

Honored were Kori Brawner, Gus Hamlin, Sawyer Schenewark, and Matthew Walters.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These students represent a valuable national resource.  Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in the nation.

With All My Love

Elder Schenewark,

Happy Sabbath! I love Sundays. Not coincidentally that it coincides with the end of my work week and the beginning of my days off, nor that there's no school lunches no make, or wash to do, but that I can be home with my family. More and more I just want to be with my family, for this is my peace and greatest happiness.

We went to Weatherford Hall middle school to watch Miller in his first 8th grade football game. He isn't supposed to be the main quarterback, but due to a little ankle twist and permanent heel issues, Miller began the game. He ran two plays to touchdown, a third to the one yard line, and one to extra points. Granbury is not a passing school, I think, but one pass of the evening, and the longest, was successfully caught converting for a first down. He had a few kick offs, which were great as well. They won 13-7. Dad uploaded some of the videos on social media since you can't see him jingle and jangle, hip and hop, twist and turn, around all those defenders.

Breyer has tried for several years to run for student council. This year she's trying again as a student council officer, eligible for fifth graders. They changed the format for candidates to now making a short video that is shown in classroom to all 3rd through 5th graders, this coming Thursday; as well as allowing them four half size poster board posters to display in the hallways beginning tomorrow. I'll be posting the posters and her pre-recorded speech on the blog. I told her about Tanner's valedictorian speech, and she chose to borrow his idea of President Hinckley's "B's". She's adorable, and I wish her the best of luck in her campaign she's worked very hard towards.

Sawyer's week consisted of a lot of homecoming activities - Friday night homecoming game, creative asking a date to the dance moment, Saturday's school dance including pictures and dinner beforehand and ice cream afterwards. Pictures will also be forthcoming for this. He's finally finishing up the huge horse order this weekend. I have it hanging on my coat hooks until he's finished with everything.

Sawyer was asked to speak in Sacrament meeting last night. He did an amazing job, and his friend zoomed in due to the late night homecoming activities. He has a baseball friend, that's friends with Julie Smith, that has been coming a lot. His topic was Reverence and Remembrance, due to 9/11 - and I loved his quote by Elder Renlund, "We remember them not for their own gratification but for the influence such remembrance has on us."

I taught in Relief Society on Elder Soares, "Ultimate Caregiver." Mom joined in on Zoom. She lifts me up.

I missed hearing your voice today - but it's not like it's been six months, as your brothers endured. So have a wonderful week. Know of our love for you.

Dear Elder Schenewark,

Tuesday night found Dad and I at the high school football field with Sawyer, watching GMS and AMS in a football scrimmage. Half the field was for the seventh grade teams, and half was for the 8th grade. Apparently before we arrived, as we were dropping Breyer off for her volleyball practice, Miller's A team was on the field first, and he ran two times, as quarterback, for two touchdowns. Those are the only two plays he participated in. Those were the only two touchdowns for either grade among all 12 teams (A, B, C 7th-8th grade AMS/GMS). Miller also played in a few defensive plays, and had a nice tackle of the quarterback for a loss. The head varsity football coach approached Miller and told him he would like him to play for him next year. Miller just said "Okay." But he has told us multiple times he's not playing football. Dad and I lasted about thirty minutes, and left, the 100 plus degree heat, metal seats, and turf field making the environment more than sweltering. Sawyer hung out in the air conditioned volleyball gym until he finished.

I apologize for not getting a letter out in a timely manner. It was a very busy weekend, and I never sat down to type.

Sawyer wanted to have a game night and it evolved into a Labor Day party, Monday. We had eight high school kids, two middle school kids, and one very cute elementary school kid playing games outside (KanJam, Kubb, corn hole, basketball) and inside (darts, Just One, couch, Twister).

I set up a mimosa bar, the nonalcoholic kind, where the kids could make their own concoction. There was a cooler full of Sonic ice, and orange juice, cranbury juice, lemonade, raspberry lemonade, 7-Up, and sparkling water. There were also cut up pieces of pineapple, strawberries and raspberries.

For lunch we had our signature natural casing beef hot dogs and bratwursts, buns or wraps, potato salad, coleslaw, lots of chips, and a veggie tray. Later on towards evening we set up a fondue selection of marshmallows, homemade Rice Krispy treats made by your cute elementary school kid, strawberries and bananas. Also a big hit and again, suggested by your cute elemetary school kid.

While Miss B was excited to help set up for the party, she wanted to help Sawyer mow. He was using the tractor and weed whipping. Unfortunately, she ran over the sprinkler head, so we have our very own Old Faithful in the backyard. How can you get mad when she was trying to help? I couldn't. But I am a little frustrated trying to get someone to call me back.

We were going to make brownies, but discovered the heating sensor or thermometer must be out, as everything gets burned. The oven heats up to tremendously high levels and then flashes an error code. The oven is original to the house, so 13 years later it probably needs to be replaced not fixed. It's been on our radar this year.

And the third strike - the dishwasher broke. It too generates high heat, but no water is moving. Nothing like dirty dishes that have been heated and dried three times for me to realize it's not working. I was going to send Jarrod out for a dish drain but after taking out all the dirty dishes realized I could use the dishwasher. The last loads in the dishwasher were all the sacrament trays Miller brought home Sunday. I'm very grateful we pushed those through on Sunday.

Thank you for your patience!

Love listening to you talk. Sometimes I just close my eyes and absorb your voice for a minute. By the way, Miller found your section of the closet and has decided to try a few of your shirts out when he's required to dress up for football. He found his own flamingo shorts, and paired it with your shirt, and used your toucan shirt with black shorts. Thanks in advance for sharing!

Love,

Mom
