With All My Love

April 19, 2022

Sunday was Easter. Happy Easter! We love you!

Monday Miller had a spring league basketball game. Sawyer was going to go and help his former teammates coach the team, but had too much math homework and some leather. So Dad and I drove him up to Brewer. There were 12 boys, that were rotated fairly consistently, in the two games. They lost by a couple of points the first game against an Arlington team, and handily won against Brock in the second game. What makes these games letter worthy was the transition from when Miller first arrived to when he left. Plus his cheering squad. Since there was no school as part of the Easter long weekend break, he spent the day in DeCordova with a few friends playing basketball and volleyball. He got home right before he was to leave and hadn't anything to eat since his French toast breakfast. His friends decided they were going to go to his game. Very sweet, Three 8th graders he played with on his basketball team loudly cheered when he got into the game. Then they went out to CiCi's Pizza in Benbrook on the way home.

During warm ups of the second game Miller dunked the ball. I missed the whole thing, but his teammates saw it. He went from sitting two rows back from the other 11 players to them asking him - during the game - to do it in the game. He tried only because they were so far ahead of the other team in points - but he missed. Again, the asked him to do it again - this time giving him a backboard shot - but it wasn't angled properly. Anyway, it was a nice transition for me to see, as him being in 8th grade, and being asked to play, is so awkward for all involved.

Sawyer has gone to a few services at Stonewater Church with his friend Ryland and when he comes home we've had a few discussions about the sermons. He enjoys them for the most part. Well thought out, well delivered, with a good message. I found one on the internet of similar value that I thought I'd share with you. Obviously our Bishop thought it was also a good message, as he shared it in sacrament meeting:

“He received 39 stripes because 40 was known to kill a man. They wanted him alive. They held handfuls of his beard, and hair and pulled it out by the roots. They wanted him alive. They kicked, punched, and spit on him for hours. Until there wasn't a single spot on his body not covered in blood. They wanted him alive. They shoved a crown of thorns down on his head so harshly it stuck in his skin. They wanted him alive. After hours of being beaten, mocked, whipped, flogged, and tortured they made him walk with a cross. They made him carry it. A rough piece of wood with splinters digging into fresh wounds. They wanted him alive. They wanted him to feel every ounce of pain they could bring. He had to feel it in order to heal us. Crucifixion was historically one of the cruelest most tortured deaths a human could face. Hours upon hours of torture. Torture most of us can not mentally think of because the cruelty isn't normal. It isn't something our minds can comprehend. We celebrate Easter with pastel colors, happy children hunting eggs, and chocolate. Truth is there was absolutely nothing happy about the day Jesus died. It was cruel, bloody, and nasty. He could have stopped all of it. He could have called every angel in heaven to demolish every person standing and shouting "Crucify Him!" He didn't. He knew in order to have a Sunday you have to have a Friday. He knew in order to have joy you have to carry your cross. He felt everything that day. He knew he had to carry the cross. He never promised the cross you carry in this life would not be heavy. His wasn't. His promise is that Sunday is coming. No matter how heavy Friday is. Financially, emotionally, mentally, or physically. Friday is heavy. That cross is weighing you down and you are about to crumble under its weight. His promise was simply this. He won't make you carry it alone. What kind of king would step down from his throne for this? Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God did. For you. He did every bit of it for you and me. Oh yes it is heavy. So heavy sometimes you do not think you can take one more step. But look up, because Sunday is coming.”

April 26, 2022

Well obviously I didn't get that letter off. It's been a busy week. I flew out Wednesday night after work to Utah for Porter's graduation. I shared with you that Bro. Duncan found me in the airport. He also saved a good seat for me on the plane, and told me he'd give me a ride to the hotel - so I cancelled Porter. I was good to catch up with them, hear about Noah, and Emily's new baby. They're wondering if the heart issues are caused by the Covid vaccine.

They dropped me off at the hotel where Porter had waited up to see me - I was checked in by 1:00 a.m. - in bed by 1:30 - up 22 hours straight. We met again for breakfast, with Hunter, Julie and the Bachs. We didn't have long to linger as the ceremony at the Marriott Center started at 10 a.m. All the speakers were great, and the music fantastic. Porter sat with us, instead of donning cap and gown and sitting with 6K other graduates he doesn't know. So no pictures that day. The Bachs took us to Tucanos Brazilian Grill. Good meat. Great salads. Better company. We parted ways for a bit, and Porter drove me to say hello to Uncle Ben, stopped by for a quick hug from Aunt Jenny, then Shannon, Violet and Derek; picked up some See's Chocolate to share and some garment tops for Dad, and then bought two new tires for Porter's car. I pulled out of my hotel reservation and stayed the night at Hunter and Julie's - with the intention of watching a movie - but instead had yummy popcorn and conversation.

Hunter, Julie and I snuck back into the hotel - using my key card - to enjoy another breakfast, before leaving for the Marriott Center convocation for Porter's college. We learned his is the largest of the university and accounts for twenty percent of the graduates. I think they read 1200 names. Economics probably won't stay there past this year, but we got a few pictures before the down pour, almost met Porter's mission president, whose son also graduated from the same economics department as Porter, and said hello to Lee and Heston Chipman.

We changed quickly, stopped by Home Depot to purchase Kevin and Trevor belatedly Derek wedding presents of all-purpose tool kits, surprised to be joined by Uncle Rich. and then headed to the airport. Porter treated me to a yummy vegetable pizza from Dominos - switching Mozzerella cheese to Provolone - YUM!

The flight home was miserable. Flight attendants had to remain in their seats - so no snacks or drinks - due to turbulence. We couldn't get out of the storm moving from state to state. The wind was extreme. I could feel the plane being bumped sideways. But obviously I'm home safe and well. Porter originally remained in SLC, working at the library grading papers, as he was asked to pick up your grandmother. She's in town for the two sealings and wedding receptions. But not getting in until after midnight made for a long day for Porter.

That's the scoop from Granbury - Uncle Aaron had some big scoops happening this weekend with his call into the stake presidency. Good stuff. He called us Sunday evening.

We love you. We're glad you're safe from the rattlesnake.

Love,

Mom

Mrs Logsdon

"I snapped this cute pic of Breyer with her award. She’s simply a fantastic, all-around star student just as Miller and Sawyer were. You have raised wonderful children! She did amazing as Belle in this week’s performance."

With All My Love

 Dear Elder Schenewark,

Hola! That is probably the extent of my Spanish repertoire. But I know how to say everything else in English. Having a common language is a plus in life. I was with your Dad on a walking / see what downtown Granbury is doing date night. We had heard it was the first Oink Oink Festival - where several pigs were roasted and served as plates to purchase from Ketzlers. While trying to find a parking space we saw the pig roast - behind the main building. We met a man hand sewing leather briefcases and purses with a steam punk vibe - think copper pipe art deco included. We walked to the baseball fields and back to downtown - a three mile walk - and got a bag of vendor caramel popcorn. While walking back to the car we passed the vendors again, and heard the patio area warming up for live music: "Music check, check, check. Music check, check, check." Your father says, "I thought this was a German festival, not a Czech one. It was hilarious. And one of the vendor's we passed was coughing water out her nose laughing so hard. Good times

I spent Saturday morning on a Dallas PD bone search. A skull was located in a field, surrounded by residential areas, about a week ago. My new team, TexSAR was called out to find the rest of the bones of the body. Because of my experience I was assigned as a flanker for one of the three dog teams. This one drove up from the gulf coast area to assist. We were assigned a four person ground unit - meaning they covered areas the dog wasn't interested in - used lots of machetes to clear the area so we could pass through, etc. I borrowed one of the ground crew, as the handler wanted them to stay about five minutes back. But we needed his bulk to push down on old barb wire fence lines we had to cross - so the dogs could get over safely, needed a machete on the front line, etc. Often we had to literally get down on hands and knees to get through thick growth, thick enough to pull off my waist pack. He retrieved it for me, as well as a battery pack cord, my phone, a map...I kept dropping everything. That is why I now wear my keys around my neck. I've had those pulled out of my pockets as well, and had no back up. He had my six.

The handler worked both of his dogs at the same time. He was very vocal about my flanking skills - and said once word got out, I'd be in high demand from other dog handlers. Yeah! Leaving that other team was a good move. And, I found the bones. I heard one dog give a huff, kind of like Wagner gives, when you're trying to get him to bark, and told the handler, who was slightly deaf, who had missed the cue. Some dogs bark and others sit, when they find the bones. I had asked ahead of time, and was told they both sat. But the noise was unique enough for me to ask, and figured it was kind of the dog's way of saying, "Hey, I found it, follow me!" I stumbled upon half of a jaw bone, orthodontic corrected teeth included, and he found a small arm bone. Then we found both femurs, two pelvic bones, a handful of vertebrae, an old tennis shoe, and we knew we found the original site. We found a rib sticking out of the ground that was attached to a back pack buried in the ground.

We got the rest of the ground team down there to mark the perimeter with flags, and then the bones with flags, got the drone over us to record the site from above, and waited for the DPD Detective that requested the search as well as the medical examiner's office.  It was a good day. Although I have contracted a case of poison ivy / poison oak - at the end of the glove line and sleeve line - it will be along two weeks. I did clear my skin two times with alcohol but should have done more.

Got back into Granbury in time to see Sawyer, his date, his friends and their dates, take lots of pictures before heading off to prom. This entailed a bus "limo" ride arranged by Rylan's parents, a dinner in Fort Worth, the prom event in Glen Rose, and then an after party that went until 6:30 a.m. I heard him come in, head to bed, and I got up for ward council. I have to admit I was surprised to see him in church. Dad gave him five minutes at 8:30 to get ready and he made it. He said he didn't want to miss church.

Monday Miller got to play with the varsity basketball team in the spring league. There's only four games - this was number one. He was last to go in but increased in playing time and position. It's fun to watch him play.

Sawyer is continuing to work on his leather work - his new orders consist of wallets, hat patches, etc. He was interviewed at school for a scholarship by the Lions Club.

Breyer had her play Tuesday. She did great. We worked out a deal with the music teacher for two reserved spots in the front row - as I was coming from Dallas and Dad was doing pick up. We all were together. Fifth graders acting are hilarious. We were told not to take pictures or video as it's copyrighted but the teacher said the school was allowd to film for school purposes and she's trying to get us a copy. We'll see.

I hope your new apartment is bug free. I hope you love your short lunch with the Bachs. I hope you enjoy your new companion - and the work you're able to accomplish together. This Sunday is Easter. My mother's favorite holiday.

Love,

Mom

With All My Love

 Dear Elder Schenewark,

There's not much news from home this week - last week's letter went out late - we spent two days watching conference - and then hit the ground running.

Miller had his last two track meets Monday and Tuesday.  Monday he competed at the district level for field events - placing first in high jump - 6'0". He tried to clear 6'2" but was not able. Tuesday he competed with his 4x200 relay and got last place. High and low - kind of like life's moments - there are a lot of ups and downs.

Monday night concluded this year's March Madness tournament with AnneMarie claiming top honors - and for those who won't see the engraving soon - look for AnneMarie "Alley-Oop" Schenewark.

What I loved about conference - from the beginning of Saturday through the end - was the emphasis placed on missionary work and the importance of missionaries. I hope you felt renewed listening to some of the thoughts shared over the pulpit. President Nelson began with his opening comments:

"We have the sacred responsibility to share the power and peace of Jesus Christ. His gospel is the only answer when many in the world are stunned with fear. This underscores the urgent need for us to follow the Lord’s instruction to His disciples to go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

"We have the sacred responsibility to share the power and peace of Jesus Christ with all who will listen and who will let God prevail in their lives.. Today I reaffirm strongly that the Lord has asked every worthy, able young man to prepare for and serve a mission. For Latter-day Saint young men, missionary service is a priesthood responsibility. You young men have been reserved for this time when the promised gathering of Israel is taking place. As you serve missions, you play a pivotal role in this unprecedented event."

Then came Elder Ballard.

"The Lord knows you. When you are serving your mission, you will have experiences that will help you come to know Him better. You will grow spiritually in serving Him. In His name, you will be sent on errands to serve others. He will give you experiences with promptings from the Holy Ghost. The Lord will authorize you to teach in His name. You can show Him that He can trust you and can rely on you."

"I pray that you will see and know how missionary service will forever bless your life. May you know in your minds and feel in your hearts the power of the invitation the Lord gave to the great missionary sons of Mosiah. He said, “Go forth … and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples … in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls.”

Anyway, I hope you get the idea. You're important, you're loved, you're thought of, and of course you're missed. Enjoy your time with the Bachs this week.

I love you!

Law School Life

It’s been 5 weeks since we’ve returned from St. George/Vegas. I’ll do a quick recap of the highlights.

Jules is rocking her job at Qualtrics. She’s made it through 3 weeks and is setting a high bar for anyone who comes after her. Jules works as a technical recruiter and helps schedule the interviews for all of the hires. Soon, she’ll be finding people for them to hire. She’s able to work from home, but went in every day last week as the lure of catered lunch was too much. There have been one or two duds but most of the meals are high-quality and I’ve been the blessed beneficiary of many of the leftovers.

Three weeks ago though, we hit up some of the case lots sales and stocked up on more food storage. Our target this time was non-essential items - things to make our food storage more usable and palatable. Our food storage will keep us alive, but probably not too happy so we added fruits, soups, diced peppers, chiles, salt, sugar, etc. And water. We didn’t have any water stored up and now have the recommended two weeks. We also did get a second fridge. We got it moved in and it’s been nice as it allows us to meal plan and freeze leftovers. Hopefully it doesn’t make our energy bill go up too much.

Meal planning has been nice especially since March was a month of hosting.

We had over:

1. My ministering people (6 other people)

2. Julie’s ministering people (6)

3. Some of my old friends (3)

4. Some of Julie’s old friends (6)

5. Derek+Shannon+Violet (3)

6. Kayla+Ryan+Scout+Hudson (4)

7. Cousins (6)

8. Ward friends (4)

9. Babysitting nieces+nephews (4)

10. Siblings Porter and Rachel numerous times (2x5?)

11. And I think some others I’m forgetting at the moment

Babysitting was especially fun. I came up with this really fun game where when everybody closes their eyes, I give them a bite of an unknown food and they tried to guess it. Some of the guesses were impressive and some of the faces were hilarious as they tried the food.

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on the 16th, being invited over by some neighbors for a fun Irish dinner. It was surprisingly yummy and we just felt lucky for everything the last year has brought us as it was a year ago (on March 13, 2021) that we started dating again and pretty much knew that we’d be getting married, with the ‘official’ dating announcement .

The real St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, we dressed up fancy and went to the law school dance, the Barrister’s Ball. We had such a great time. Dinner was ok, but it was fun to be with friends, and I danced more than I ever have in my life, mostly just trying to keep up with Jules.

The Barrister’s Ball served as a nice reminder that this semester is quickly wrapping up. This is the last week of classes and then two weeks of finals await me. A lot is up in the air  right now. I’ve decided I won’t be staying at Sumsion Business Law for the summer. I’m going to try and see if I can get an internship at Qualtrics and work with my wife. If not, then I’m hoping to land a position at a real estate development company. Friday I had my MBA interview and the interviewer all but guaranteed I’d be admitted, so I’m hoping the official good news will happen this coming week and that will help me in my search.

In March I ran for two positions. First, I ran for state delegate. I was very hopeful and optimistic, but unfortunately didn’t come out in front. I thought I acquitted myself well, speaking articulately and answering questions intelligently and sincerely. Oh well. Jules was with me on election night and she got really into it which was fun to see, and overall I'm glad I gave it a shot and loved the experience. It was good to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.

The following week I ran for Vice-President of the Federalist Society. John Lee is the son of Senator Mike Lee, and is the president. I thought about going up against him, but didn’t think I’d have the time necessary to do a good job in the position and knew it would be tough to usurp the family tradition of being Federalist Society President.

The last two months at the law firm have been pretty negative. I’m flabbergasted by some of the decisions that are made. That said, I’ve made some good friends and am grateful for what I’ve learned and the opportunities working there has provided me. And it hasn’t all been sour. Last week, we had a 30 person ping-pong tournament and I survived some close calls to come out on top, including my finals match against the state tennis champ. That victory compensates somewhat for my last-place finish in the family March Madness Tournament. The girls just about swept the podium for that one. Annemarie won first, Breyer (with the absolute classic bracket name of Guinea Pig Dunk) came in second, and Dad slipped in at the end to take 3rd, beating Jules in 4th.

Last items:

1. Jules gave me a great haircut. Artistic ability seems to carry over in unexpected ways.

2. We played catch for the first time

3. We spoke in church. Our topic was “Making the exercise of faith your first priority.” It was a good experience and we both learned a lot as we prepared our talks.

4. We took Sawyer’s friend Tyler, and his parents out for ice cream at the Creamery. Tyler is considering going to BYU, and we were trying to convince him that he should. Not only do we think he’d love it, but it might mean Sawyer will come out for a year before his mission. Regardless, it was fun to get ice cream and meet someone from Granbury.

Conference this weekend was wonderful. We stayed home for most of it, but did go to Wallsburg to see John and Lenita + fam Sunday morning. We were greeted with hugs and cinnamon rolls which is my preferred way of being greeted. Pres. Nelson’s talk that session was my favorite of the entire conference.  This week, I’ve been praying to know how I can be more spiritually invigorated and when he spoke it seemed like he was personally addressing my question. If you missed it, go back and listen to what the Prophet said. Here’s the five specific points he mentioned:

1. Get on the covenant path and stay there

2. Experience the joy of repenting daily

3. Learn about God and how He works

4. Seek and expect miracles

5. Strive to end conflict in your life

I remember attending the funeral for Pres. Monson in January 2018. I went to pay my respects to Pres. Monson but the defining moment that day happened when Pres. Nelson walked in. I KNEW, undeniably, as the spirit of the Lord bore powerful witness to me, that he is the Prophet of God today, appointed to convey God’s message for the church. And I know the same thing today: Russel M. Nelson is the Lord’s anointed. Follow the Prophet!
